LIEM TALBOTT
Original Character (Pathfinder RPG) CANON 123 (looks mid-twenties) AGE Meridian FACTION Tier 3 HARMONIZATION LEVEL
War for the Crown Book 3 CANON POINT Male (he/him) GENDER Harbinger ASPECT Tier 1 DISCORD LEVEL
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
visual: Liem is 5'8" with a lean, athletic build. His hair is short, brown, swept back from his face, and greying prematurely at the temples. He has an aquiline nose, an ashen complexion, and always looks at least a little bit tired. He is often seen in sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Liem otherwise dresses in tailored, highly professional attire suited to the locale he's in, which as a resident of Springstar, means light colours enlivened with patterns and embroidery. He is also quite fond of jewellery.

features: Pale blue eyes with black sclera, slightly pointed ears, fangs, and a brand shaped like a key on the palm of his right hand. Liem also casts no shadow.

aural: Liem's speaking voice is a pleasant tenor: sober and even, with an accent that in Earth terms sounds convincingly Italian. Think Andrea Bocelli. He rarely ever shouts and doesn't rush his words.

olfactory: He usually smells faintly of soap and other personal care products, favouring warm, spicy and woody scents with top notes of citrus. Beneath this, his natural scent is strangely cool and sharp, like chilled earth and winter fog.

demeanour: Generally steady, dutiful, and politely formal; he becomes especially formal when he's made uncomfortable, crossing the line over into stiff. Pragmatic, and self-sacrificing to a fault. He sometimes displays a rather dry, deadpan sense of humour.

SHARD
Located on his sternum, in the shape of an eight-pointed star reminiscent of a compass. His shard usually appears dark, mottled blue, but it flares with a rainbow of other colours when he's using magic or harmonization abilities.

ASPECT TATTOO
Located on the side of his neck, tucked behind his left ear. His aspect tattoo is usually black, but turns red when he tastes blood.

PERSONALITY
Liem is first and foremost a dutiful man, one who takes responsibility seriously and expects others to do the same. He values order in his life and in his surroundings, becoming irritable when faced with unexpected obstacles because of someone else's negligence or disorganization, and is rarely found idle when there is something that needs to be done. Years of being scrutinized twice as closely as any of his fully-human peers have led Liem to strive obsessively to meet the expectations placed on him, willingly sacrificing rest and leisure rather than risk falling short. As a result, he is most often found keeping busy with tasks that require his attention, and will go out of his way to find ways in which to make himself useful if he's spent too long without anything further to accomplish.

In his day-to-day life, Liem is a courteous and amicable man with a dry sense of humour, though he tends to maintain a level of formality which can seem excessive in certain situations. He is deliberate in both word and deed, having been raised in the most formal and austere of environments—the church of Abadar, which values order and justice over love, art, freedom, or pity. That being the case, his manner can at times lack warmth, as he learned in his formative years that it's better to seem aloof than to speak rashly in excitement or anger. Formality is the crutch that he falls back on when circumstances confuse or upset him, making him stuffier to be around the less comfortable he is in a situation.

BACKGROUND
content warnings: death in childbirth, child neglect & abuse, spiritual abuse, spoilers for the War for the Crown adventure path

short summary: Liem was orphaned shortly after birth, was raised by his abusive uncle and then by the Abadaran church, was trained as an inquisitor, and eventually became ordained as a priest. He recently swore himself into Princess Eutropia's service and participated in a civil war to decide the next ruler of Taldor. After working for months in support of the princess, he was killed at the end of a difficult mission.

full background: [CLICK TO EXPAND] Liem's life began in 4597 AR in Oppara, the opulent capital city of the ancient Taldan Empire. He was an orphan almost since birth; his wasted mother died soon after he took his first breaths, and his vampire father had already abandoned his wife not long after his own death and Liem's subsequent conception. Liem and his older sister were taken in by their uncle Williem, who had been caring for his sister during her pregnancy. Resenting both children for their father's actions, he raised them only grudgingly, often taking his anger out on both of them, but especially Liem. His sister escaped as soon as she was able, leaving to pursue an apprenticeship around the time that Liem turned eight.

Liem lived alone with his uncle for almost two years, until Williem sent him away to the Church of Abadar, the god of law and commerce. There Liem was both comprehensively educated and sternly disciplined, instilling faith and obedience into him alongside the knowledge he would need to function in society. During this time, he was stringently forbidden to indulge in any behaviour which was judged to stem from his vampire heritage, forcing him into a highly structured diurnal lifestyle which made him feel constantly judged by both himself and the clergy around him. He continued to feel out of place in the church, feeling that he was not living up to their expectations, until the inquisitor branch took advantage of his desire for community by recruiting him.

As an inquisitor, Liem was encouraged to put to use skills that he had previously been expected to repress. Feeling that he had found his purpose, he trained hard and served with unquestioning zeal. As his faith deepened over the years, he pursued further religious education and was eventually ordained as a priest, but his primary work continued to be in sniffing out and correcting threats to the prosperity of his church and country.

Then, in late winter of 4718 AR, his work led him into the service of Lady Martella Lotheed, and her secret support of Princess Eutropia's bid for the throne—along with fellow agents Rhain, Drifa, and Juliana. After saving Lady Martella's life in the wake of the Taldan Emperor's assassination, Liem and his companions officially swore themselves into the princess's service and began undertaking covert missions to strengthen the princess's position in a civil war which would decide Taldor's next ruler.

A few months into this work, after helping the princess to reclaim the imperial summer palace and its surrounding county as her base of operations, Liem and his companions were sent on a mission to the town of Yanmass. The journey there was long, and the mission itself taxing, but eventually the town's loyalty was secured and the group was ready to head back to the palace—along with the princess's newly-discovered brother, recently brought back from the dead after 20 long years. As they were leaving the city, however, they were attacked by a psychopomp intent on reclaiming the prince's soul, and Liem was killed in the ensuing battle.

ABILITIES & SKILLS
DHAMPIR TRAITS senses: As a dhampir, Liem's senses are keener than those of a normal human man. He can see in dim light, such as that of dusk or the light of a full moon, as easily as someone in a well-lit room. He also has the ability to see in complete darkness within 60 feet of him.

negative energy affinity: Although he is a living creature, Liem reacts to positive and negative energy as if he were undead. In his home setting, this means that magic meant to heal living people hurts him, but magic meant to bolster undead creatures heals him.

resist level drain: Liem suffers no noticeable ill-effects from abilities which drain the energy of living creatures (such as the life-stealing kiss of a succubus). He can still be killed if he suffers enough such attacks within the span of a single day, but isn't weakened up until the point that he dies.

undead resistance: As a dhampir, Liem's partially-undead physiology makes him resistant (but not immune) to diseases and attempts to access or influence his mind.
TRAVEL DOMAIN base speed: Liem's walking/running speed is about a third faster than most fit and able-bodied humans from his world, giving him a running speed of roughly 29 km/h.

agile feet: Seven times per day, Liem can use this ability to easily navigate difficult terrain. For the next 6 seconds, he can move normally through any terrain as easily as if it were flat, solid ground. This allows him to navigate stairs, rubble, thick undergrowth, mud, and other similar environments without difficulty for brief periods when mobility is important.

dimensional hop: Liem can teleport to a destination within view, up to a maximum of 100 feet of distance per day. He can bring another creature with him, but he must expend an equal amount of distance for the additional creature (eg: teleporting 20 feet with one other person would expend 40 feet of distance from his daily allotment).
SPELL-LIKE ABILITIES detect alignment: Liem can use this ability to magically detect the nearby presence of good, evil, law, or chaos. If you are fine with Liem using this ability in threads with your character, please drop a comment on my opt-in/opt-out post, including your character's alignment aura (or lack thereof)!

discern lies: For up to a minute each day, Liem can use this ability to magically detect when someone is telling a lie. Discern lies can be resisted, in which case he won't know whether or not his target was lying; when he uses this ability, I always leave it up to the relevant character's player what they want the result to be.
SUPERNATURAL ABILITIES
judgement: [CLICK TO EXPAND] Four times per day, Liem can call upon his god's power to aid him in combat. Whenever he does so, he receives two of the following benefits. One judgement lasts for the entire duration of battle, but Liem can change which benefits he receives over its course.
• Destruction—Grants a small bonus to weapon damage.
• Justice—Grants a small bonus to attack accuracy.
• Piercing—Makes Liem's spells more difficult to disrupt and more likely to overcome magic resistance.
• Protection—Surrounds Liem with a protective aura, making him harder to hit.
• Purity—Makes it easier for Liem to resist hostile spells and effects.
• Resiliency—Grants minor damage reduction which is only ignored by chaos-aligned weapons.
• Resistance—Shields Liem with a flickering aura, granting energy resistance against either acid, cold, electricity, fire, or sonic energy.
• Smiting—Bathes Liem's weapons in divine light; his weapons count as magic, law-aligned, and adamantine for the purposes of bypassing damage reduction.

bane: For up to a minute each day, Liem can use this ability to make a weapon that he wields significantly more accurate and effective against a specific kind of enemy (eg: humans, dragons, undead).
SPELLS Unless otherwise stated, casting any of the following spells requires Liem to speak aloud (verbal component) and gesture with at least one free hand (somatic component). Many of these spells also require the use of a divine focus, for which Liem can use either a physical symbol of Abadar, or the brand on his right palm.

level 0 spells: [CLICK TO EXPAND] Simple spells that are not magically taxing to cast. Liem can use them as often as he deems necessary.
• Create Water—Creates up to 20 gallons of pure water, either as a downpour or in containers within 50 feet.
• Detect Magic—While Liem concentrates, detects spells and magic items within 60 feet.
• Detect Poison—Detects poison in one creature, object, or 5-foot area within 50 feet.
• Light—Touched object shines like a torch for 100 minutes. Requires only a verbal component and divine focus.
• Oath of Anonymity—Subtly alters Liem's voice, body language, and worn or carried possessions for up to 100 minutes, as long as he avoids revealing his face or other identifiable features. Requires only a verbal component.

level 1 spells: [CLICK TO EXPAND] Liem can cast up to five of his level 1 spells per day.
• Expeditious Retreat—Grants a significant increase to Liem's walking/running speed for 10 minutes, allowing him to run roughly 51 km/h.
• Heightened Awareness—Improves Liem's recall and ability to process information for 100 minutes. This allows him to better remember information, as well as making him more perceptive. Requires only a verbal component and divine focus.
• Inflict Light Wounds—Harms a touched living creature or heals touched undead by a small amount.
• Shield of Faith—Creates a protective aura around touched creature for 10 minutes that helps to deflect some attacks. Requires material component (piece of parchment with holy text written on it).

level 2 spells: [CLICK TO EXPAND] Liem can cast up to four of his level 2 spells per day.
• Blistering Invective—As part of the casting of the spell, Liem castigates opponents within 30 feet. All opponents who are intimidated also take fire damage.
• Focused Scrutiny—For up to 100 minutes, gives Liem heightened sensitivity to one target creature, making it easier for him to notice or track it, discern its intentions or state of mind, or to intimidate or persuade it.
• Inflict Pain—Wracks a target's mind with agonizing pain, making mental and physical actions difficult. The pain lasts for a minute, or for just six seconds if the spell is resisted.
• Litany of Duty—Immediately gives Liem a second chance to resist magic that would cause him to take an action against his will. Requires a divine focus.

level 3 spells: [CLICK TO EXPAND] Liem can cast up to three of his level 3 spells per day.
• Blood Biography—When cast on a creature's blood, this spell identifies the creature (listing its name, race, gender, and profession or role), and reveals how and when its blood was shed. If the creature is not dead, it might resist the spell. Requires a divine focus. Cast time: 1 minute.
• Hide from Undead, Greater—Prevents undead from noticing target creatures for up to 100 minutes. Intelligent undead might resist the spell, but it always functions against mindless undead. Requires a divine focus.
• Terrible Remorse—Compels a target creature to harm itself. The spell ends after a minute, or when the magic is resisted, whichever comes first.

level 4 spells: [CLICK TO EXPAND] Liem can cast one of his level 4 spells per day.
• Divine Power—Imbues Liem with strength, vigour, and combat skill for up to one minute. Requires a divine focus.
• Judgement Light—Creates a 30-foot-radius burst of light which has different effects depending on the judgements Liem has active. (Eg: The destruction judgement damages enemies within the light, the protection judgement protects allies, and so on.)
HARMONIZATION ABILITIES communion: Through communion, Liem can psychically communicate words, images, even memories and emotions with other shard-bearers. In the presence of other Harbingers, Liem may even find it difficult to block out their emotions or avoid transmitting his own.

teleportation: As a shard-bearer, Liem can teleport from Cornerstone to Cornerstone, enabling him to travel to any island on Kenos where a Cornerstone is established.

purification: Liem can purge Discord from other shard-bearers through physical contact. This ability is able to reduce the Discord level of Advocates and Iconoclasts, but it can also temporarily soothe the Discord symptoms of Stargazers and Savants.

cornerstone creation: Tier 2 ability. By imbuing it with Meridian's energy, Liem can turn a stone or crystal of at least 1 meter in any dimension into a Cornerstone. This process requires physical contact and 5 minutes of concentration.

corruption: Tier 2 ability. Liem can worsen a shard-bearer's Discord by up to a full level through physical contact. This ability can be used once per day without penalty; if used a second time in one day, the strain causes him to fall unconscious.

true sight: Tier 3 ability. When using this ability, Liem can discern a shard-bearer's faction and level of harmonization by viewing any portion of their shard.

spells: [CLICK TO EXPAND] Spells gained through harmonization are not limited by spell slots, but do cause some amount of Discord buildup when used. Tier 1 spells increase Discord by only a minor amount when used, but higher tier spells cause Discord to build up faster.
• Alarm—Tier 1 spell. Allows Liem to designate an access point or space up to a 20-foot cube. When a creature touches or enters the warded area, the spell sets off an audible or mental alarm.
• Mending—Tier 1 spell. Repairs a break or tear in an object, as long as the break is no larger than 1 foot in any dimension.
• Protective Penumbra—Tier 1 spell. Protects a creature from the harmful effects of sunlight.

• Arcane Lock—Tier 2 spell. Permanently imbues a door, window, container, or so on with a magical lock that can be bypassed only by Liem and those he designates, or those with the password. Only magical means can undo the lock.
• Locate Object—Tier 2 spell. Allows Liem to sense the direction of a specific object he has seen, or a type of object, as long as it is within 1,000 feet.
• Tiny Hut—Tier 2 spell. Creates a 10-foot-radius sphere that can comfortably shelter and protect Liem and up to 9 other human-sized creatures. Lasts 8 hours, or until Liem leaves the sphere.
• Zone of Truth—Tier 2 spell. Creates a 15-foot-radius sphere, within which anyone Harmonized at Tier 3 or lower cannot knowingly lie. Liem is aware when people within the sphere are not affected by the spell.

• Hallow—Tier 3 spell. Over the course of 24 hours of casting, magically affects an area up to a 60-foot radius, imbuing it with one of the following effects:
Courage. Creatures are bolstered by a higher degree of courage while in the area.
Daylight. Bright light fills the area. Magical darkness created by spells lower than Tier 3 can't extinguish the light.
Energy Protection. Creatures in the area have resistance to an element of your choice.
Energy Vulnerability. Creatures in the area have vulnerability to an element of your choice.
Everlasting Rest. Dead bodies interred in the area can't be turned into undead.
Extradimensional Interference. Creatures can't move or travel using teleportation or other magical means.
Factional Ward. You can choose to have the secondary effect in this list to only affect one of the factions. For example, the “Courage” effect could only be applied to your own faction or “Fear” could only be applied to the opposing faction.
Fear. Creatures are frightened while in the area.
Silence. No sound can emanate from within the area, and no sound can reach into it.
Tongues. Creatures can communicate with any other creature in the area, even if they don't share a common language.
• Mislead—Tier 3 spell. Liem becomes invisible, and an illusory duplicate appears in his place. The duplicate can move, speak, and act; at will, Liem may switch from using his own senses to using the duplicate's. The duplicate exists for an hour, but Liem's invisibility ends if he attacks or casts a spell.
TOKEN ABILITIES fast healing: Liem's natural rate of healing is supernaturally fast, allowing his wounds to stop bleeding rapidly, and to heal completely within anywhere from a full day to just minutes depending on the extent and severity of the injury. He is even capable of regenerating mangled and ruined body parts, as long as the damage isn't immediately fatal — and as long as there's still something left to regenerate.

Drinking blood gives his healing an extra boost, enabling him to recover rapidly from even serious injuries.

vampirism: For a modest amount of time (between 1 and 6 hours) after drinking blood from a living person, Liem's strength and vitality increase to superhuman levels, commensurate with the upper range defined by the game's power cap.

After that point, as long as Liem has drunk a living person's blood recently enough that he has not begun going through withdrawal, his strength and vitality remain elevated to a moderate degree, putting him on the high end of normal human ability.

After several days, if Liem does not drink again, he will go into a period of withdrawal (lasting at least a week). He will become weaker and frailer than normal, look visibly more deathly and haggard, and become more likely to succumb to bloodthirst in the face of an opportunity to drink. This period of withdrawal may become more intense and last longer after repeated instances of blood-drinking. Furthermore, although his illness will eventually abate if he does not drink, the intensity of his bloodthirst will not, until he can drink living blood again.

empathic bite: Liem's bite creates a bond between him and the bitten person, lasting for up to several days. During the bite itself, the bond goes two ways, allowing the sharing of emotions and sensations. Thereafter, Liem can vaguely sense that person's state, such as any strong emotions they're having or intense sensations they're experiencing. If he mentally communicates with that person while the bond is active, they cannot block him out.

spider climb: Liem can climb over vertical surfaces and even along ceilings with ease, clinging to them just as easily as a spider.
BOONS sand clone: Summons a temporary clone of Set, made out of sand. The clone has a very limited duration, is weaker than the original Set, and has no powers beyond reforming its own body. (So, it can make a weapon for itself using its own sand, but can't control other sand in the vicinity or use any of Set's other powers.) He can call on Set's power to summon it for aid once per week.

OUT OF CHARACTER
Writing Style: Brackets preferred, but I'm willing to match style.

Backtagging: I prefer to wrap threads up within 1–2 months, but I'm willing to backtag longer to get through a specific point in a thread.

Threadhopping: Generally fine if it's in a mingle or a reply to an open network post. Otherwise, ask.

Offensive Subjects: None, but I appreciate a warning before a thread veers wildly into unexpected territory.

IN CHARACTER
Physical Violence: Violence & minor injuries are fine if that seems warranted. For anything more severe, let's discuss first. Graphic violence doesn't bother me, but I prefer not to be surprised by a big tone shift partway through a thread.

Death/Dissipation: Only if we've agreed on it for the thread.

Physical Affection: Casual physical contact is fine as long as it's not overly familiar, but anything intimate will need to be worked towards. He is both very touch starved and very guarded.

Shipping/Sex: See above. Under normal circumstances, expect drawn-out slow burn while he's coaxed into actually admitting that he has feelings and/or desires. Smut is gucci if things get to that point.

Mental/Communion: Mind-reading, dream-peeking, empathy, etc is all fine. Just give me a heads up first so I can make sure to include what your character would sense in my replies. Liem has some natural resistance to mind-affecting effects, but he's not immune.

Offensive Subjects: Liem's background involves childhood neglect and abuse, and themes of depression, self-harm, or suicidal thoughts may come up in certain situations. If you are sensitive to any of these topics and would like me to avoid them, please post to my opt-in/opt-out post to let me know.
